Capillary Electrophoresis

Area Linked to:
Applied & Analytical Chemistry
Research Area:
Chemical Analysis

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is used to separate ionic species by their charge and frictional forces and hydrodynamic radius. Neutral molecules can also be separated using a charged surfactant in the background electrolyte. CE is used for separation and quantification of anions (Cl-, F-, NO3-, PO43-, SO42- etc.), cations, pestisides, water analysis, chiral drug analysis and analysis of biomolecules. The technique is complementary to HPLC but has the advantage that only aqueous solutions are needed for these separations instead of costly organic solvents. The analysis is fast, accurate and reproducible.
